wheat germ oil

Posted on April 22nd, 2007.

I was supplementing with wheat germ oil for
vitamin E before I decided to go GF.
Does anyone know if it’s safe to take?
I would guess it would depend on how
sensitive one is to wheat or gluten - it
would be pretty much gluten-free, but
contaminated, probably.

As I understand it, the consensus is that wheat germ isn’t gluten free. (I
stand ready to be corrected, though. :) Iherb sells a Vitamin E oil (NOW, I
think) that comes from sunflower seed. Unfortunately, most supplements of
Vit E are wheat or soy. :P

Wheat germ is part of the wheat seed, so it has the same proteins
in it that that rest of the seed has, only maybe not so many. The
oil doesn’t have *much* protein, but enough that a lot of people
do react to it. It’s kind of the same situation as barley malt, which
is made from sprouted barley and so has little protein in it, but it
sure does make people sick! It’s important to remember that for
a sensitive person, it doesn’t have to be a complete protein to
cause problems … protein fragments, peptides, are enough to cause
a problem and homeopathic amounts are enough to cause a reaction.
