Using lots of carbs may lead to breast cancer

Posted on February 7th, 2007.

Latest efforts cencerning the effect of high-carb diet indicated that it may harm not only your slenderness. Researches shown that it can heighten the risk of breast cancer. It was found out that women who use a lot of carbs are more than twice inclined to breast cancer than those who eate less sugar and starch.

It was investigated how low-carb diet might influence your chances to get cancer, contrary to its impact on cholesterol and heart disease. But the discoveries absolutely don’t mean that you can safely eat lots of meat, cheese and fats, as many people who go on low-carb diets do, as it may also harm you health.

Dr. Walter Willett, chief of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health says: “There are many concerns with eating diets high in animal fat. If people do want to cut back on carbohydrates, it’s really important to do it in a way that emphasizes healthy fats, like salads with salad dressings.”

Investigations concerning the effect of fats, fiber and specific foods on different kinds of cancer have been conducted for a long time before but produced few results. It is known that overweight raises risk, but the new study determined that high carbohydrate diet brings much greater risk.

It is considered that carbs may increase a risk of cancer by the way of quickly raising sugar level in the blood, leading to insulin lift. This forces cells to be divided causing higher estrogen levels in the blood, both of which can bring you to cancer.

A study conducted a year ago shown that high-carb diets slightly increased the risk of colon cancer. Then a small research has been done concerning the effect of those diets on breast cancer, and results have been mixed. Last year research shown greater risk for young women who used a lot of sweet food.
According to this research, those women who got more than 60% of their calories from carbs were more than 2 times inclined to have breast cancer than those whose carb use was about 50%.
Dr. Willett said that the openings raised concern about the possible negative effects from using lots of carbohydrates especially for people who have diabetes, insulin resistance or are overweight. It means that diet is important concerning cancer risk.

In those reasearch women who ate whole grains, fruits and vegetables which contain a lot of insoluble fiber had partly reduced a risk of breast cancer because fiber can control the absorption of carbohydrates. It leads to the believe that diets containing fiber would be less strongly associated with breast cancer.
Specialists consider that more research is necessary that will be not only rely on women’s memories about what they ate. Thay advised them keep diaries and then follow them during years to watch how cancer develops. It is rather important because diet is one of the few risk factors a woman can simply control.
Dr. Willett noted that this study isn’t sufficient for people to make changes in their diet, but is a cautionary sign.

According to the recommendations of The Institute of Medicine carbohydrates should constitute 45 percent to 65 percent of calories, and that no more than 20 percent should come from added sugars. New dietary guidelines are planned to be performed next year.

Very useful page. Thank you for the information. Breast cancer is very important and the survival will be better if the cancer is detected early.
